Info: Afterwork with Röda Korsets folkhögskola. Two students from their course in Global Development, who travelled to Zambia in 2009, come to share their experiences. We gather at 6pm and listen to the speach, whereafter we have something to eat together. Welcome!
On Tuesday May 5th, we were a few members and friends of members who listened to Joanna, Rebecca and Karin from The Red Cross Folkhögskola in Stockholm sharing their feelings, reflections and photos with us. They were part of a group of 16 students that spent 6 weeks in Zambia in the beginning of 2009. They visited the Zambian Red Cross and several other organisations working with children and youth in their fight against hiv/aids. In smaller groups, they also participated in the work done by the Red Cross volunteers in Zambia. They found that the UN convention on the rights of the child was better known among youth in Zambia than in Sweden and they were impressed by the way different organisations, e.g. Youth Development Organisation, used theatre and role play for sex education and information about hiv/aids. They also realized that it was difficult to talk about indvidual experiences but through the expressions shown in e.g. role plays it became obvious that the situation can be very difficult for especially young women.

Small impressions from the evening: As usual we were gathered at our Ethiopian restaurant in this dark first Tuesday, November evening the 4th. There were 18 persons. We were graced with the presence of Zambias Ambassador Mrs Joyce Musenge as our guest speaker, who started off by briefing us on the just ended elections before continuing to talk about the rights of women in Zambia today. The discussion was so lively and a lot of interesting question were raised such as: What is the role of the civil society? Rights for employees working in the mines? Etc. There was a look at laws of inheritance and on a lighter note we also discussed; When will Zambia have a woman President? After the discussions we continued upstairs with drinks and foods. There was also a display of the Mekamo trousers which are produced in Zambia. //Joyce Phiri de Maré, SweZam

Small impressions from the evening: In April we received visiting midwife students Esther Mbewe and Lucy Mkandawire from Zambia and their teacher Miriam Muyuya. The ladies, affiliated to UTH training clinic in Lusaka, were here on a short exchange program with the Karolinska Institute. They gave valuable testimonies of everyday work as a midwife in Zambia today. Mrs. Muyuya, who has been a nurse and midwife for more than 25 years, said that the most striking development during her career has been the decrease in resources and equipment. While in 1982, four midwifes would share one shift at UTH obstetric clinic, one midwife is now alone in charge! The problem of brain drain was also discussed. //Anna Tyllström, SweZam
