Overwhelming Independence Day

The ambassador embracing two birthday children on the Independence of Zambia.

True to tradition, Zambians and friends of Zambia joined once again on the 24th of October to celebrate Zambia’s 45 years of indepence from colonial rule.

As one entered the Zambia House in Djursholm, the site of seeing the many women and men so glamorously dressed in different patterns of the traditional chitenge dresses and shirts, was just overwhelming.

As the independence celebration was happening just at the end of the European Development Days (EDD), and many Zambians who had been at this conference were amidst including the Auditor General to name a few.

When time for speeches came, SweZam through its Chairman Rolf Svanström commended Zambia for having identified the Health scandal and bringing out the culprits to book, however what he challenged Zambia was the lack of timeframes for these development issue.

The vice-chairperson of Pamodzi association reminded all the local Zambians present on who they were as Zambians living in Sweden in the diaspora.

The third and final speech was from the Ambassador, Joyce Musenge, whose speech was mainly based on reflections from the European Development Days. She critically looked at issues of how the West and developing countries should standardize terminologies when reporting. She gave an example of the misunderstanding in the categorisations of Corruption and theft in the events of the Health scandal.

After the speeches a toast was made in honour of the political leadership and thereafter everyone were invited to the buffer table where hot Zambian delicacies comprising nshima, stews and vegetables of rape and chiwawa were served. SweZam had for sale some brouchers whose profits went to its Youth club in Kitwe.

Botswana gave flavour to the AGM 2009

måndag, mars 30th, 2009

Did you miss the Annual General Meeting? Here comes a small report from the SweZam AGM – which was held on the 14th of March 2009.

Some two dozen members of the Swedish-Zambia Association made their way to Etnografiska museet on March 14 for the Annual General Meeting, one of the regular features on the Swe-Zam calendar.

Swedish journalists recounted their scary story

Early arrivals heard Swedish journalists Jenny Söderqvist and Helen Åberg recount their terrifying experience of coping in the Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana after their hired vehicle exploded and they were stranded without water among wild animals. The two made headlines in Sweden when their ordeal was reported in May 2006, and they have also written about their experience in the book, Exit Kalahari. After their exciting story, the respective friendship associations met for more mundane discussions at different locations in the museum.

The AGM was chaired by Rolf Svanström

Swe-Zam Chairman Rolf Svanström made a summary of activities during 2008, including highlights from the Youth Rights Information Centre project at Mindolo. Members supported extending this project, giving the incoming board one of its first tasks. But as Treasurer Elisabeth Persson and others noted, there is need to raise more funds for the mandatory portion that Swe-Zam has to pay in order to secure funds from Forum Syd. Members, including those not able to attend the March 14 meetings, were invited to suggest means to raise funds – contact information for the board is offered on the website and in the Newsletter. The meeting also approved some amendments to the constitution, and elected a new board for the coming year.

Drinks and food were delicious as usual

With the formalities taken care of, it was time to get a drink and mingle with members and guests from other associations before finding a seat at one of the dozen tables set up in “verkstan”.The buffet offered dishes familiar from both Swedish and Southern African dinner tables, including a classic meat dish from Botswana with pounded meat cooked off the bone.Unlike previous years, there was no disco. The joint events ended with a special showing of “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” an adaption of Alexander McCall Smith’s first book in the best-selling series on Mma Ramotswe. Quite a few chuckles were heard afer the film as people went to get their coats and headed out into the wintry Stockholm night.

The audience were really looking forward to watching the exclusive filmThe No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency was showed exclusively for the guests of the AGM
