The Swedish journalist Petter Polme is often writing interesting and mind-opening about Zambia: ”I never thought I would be happy to announce that a 74 year old man has won an election.”

He continues: ”Especially not one who is a populist who lashes out against anyone, supports Mugabe and also wants to throw out Chinese investors. But still when opposition leader Michael Sata was formally declared the winner of the Zambian Presidential Election of 2011 I cheered with the Zambians. When southern hemisphere now enters into spring, democracy in Zambia is in full bloom.”

Former Zambian MP Rolf Shenton presented his views on Natural Resource Management in Zambia as a vehicle to poverty reduction on the After Work meeting 21 September.

Empowerment and good stewardship through Community Based Natural Resource Management is a promising way to a future for the Zambian youth under 15, who constitutes 50% of the Zambian population. The successful Namibia’s conservancy project is seen as a role model. Read more (pdf) >>

This year’s lecture was be given by Jan Eliasson, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, and former President of the UN General Assembly. The title of the lecture is Peace, Development and Human Rights: The Indispensable Connection.

Ambassador Eliasson’s lecture departs from The UN General Assembly statement in 2005 that Peace, Development and Human Rights are the three pillars on which to base international action. He points to their intrinsic relations. Eliasson also brings out how Hammarskjöld’s appreciation of nature and culture formed an organic link to diplomacy and international action. Swedish Foreign Minister to visit Zambia on anniversary of Hammarskjold crash

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is due to visit Zambia on September 18 to commemorate the memory of the late UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of Hammarskjold’s death in a plane crash near Ndola.

In addition to attending a memorial ceremony, Bildt was also to meet representatives of the Zambian government and other officials.

Sweden to send election observers to Zambia

Sweden is prepared to send 10 election observers to the upcoming elections in Zambia, according to a cabinet decision on July 14.

The elections are likely to be held at the end of September, but the definite date will be known when President Banda dissolves parliament.

”The election obervers are tasked with ensuring that the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections are held in accordance with international norms,” Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson said in a statement.

She added that the monitors could also ”help reduce tensions and increase confidence in the democractic process.”

The cabinet decision was made after a request from the European Union. The monitors were to be selected and trained by the government aid agency Sida, the statement said.
